Luck Pillars add a traditional sequence of ten-year contexts to the natal chart. They describe changing symbolic conditions, not guaranteed outcomes.

01 · 起运

Calculate the first starting age

The first major cycle does not always begin at age eight. Its starting age is derived from the birth moment and the relevant solar term.

Set the sequence direction

Gender at birth and the birth-year stem polarity determine whether the sequence advances or reverses from the Month Pillar.

What is a BaZi Luck Pillar?

A Luck Pillar, or Da Yun (大运), is one stem-and-branch pair applied to an approximately ten-year stage of life. It is read alongside the fixed Four Pillars birth chart, not on its own.

How is the first Luck Pillar starting age calculated?

The starting age comes from the birth moment, the relevant solar term, and whether the sequence runs forward or backward. It is calculated for the individual chart rather than assumed to begin at a universal age.

Why does the calculator ask for gender?

In the classical rule used here, gender at birth combines with the Yin or Yang polarity of the birth-year stem to determine whether the Luck Pillar sequence moves forward or backward from the Month Pillar.

Do I need an exact birth time and birthplace?

Use the most accurate birth time you have. Birthplace supplies a local solar-time correction, which can matter when the recorded time is close to a two-hour or solar-term boundary.

What does the free result include?

The free result shows the calculated first starting age and eight ten-year Gan-Zhi periods with no account or email required. The optional one-time $4.99 reading explains how those periods interact with the rest of the chart.

Do Luck Pillars predict good or bad events?

No. They are a traditional timing framework, not a guarantee that a specific event will occur. Different BaZi schools can also use different start-age rounding conventions near a solar term boundary.
