What is BaZi?

An Ancient System, Still Relevant Today

BaZi, which literally translates to “Eight Characters” in Chinese, is a sophisticated system of destiny analysis that has been practiced for over a thousand years. Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches

The building blocks of every BaZi chart are the 10 Heavenly Stems and the 12 Earthly Branches. Together, they form a 60-combination cycle (the Sexagenary Cycle) that has been used to mark time in Chinese culture for millennia.

The 10 Heavenly Stems each represent an element in either its Yin or Yang form:

The 12 Earthly Branches correspond to the 12 Chinese zodiac animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig) and each carries hidden elements within it. These hidden stems add layers of depth to a BaZi reading, revealing secondary personality traits and latent potential.

Your Day Master: The Core of Your Identity

The single most important element in your BaZi chart is your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents your core identity, natural temperament, and fundamental approach to life. There are 10 possible Day Masters, one for each Heavenly Stem.

For example, if your Day Master is Yang Wood (甲), you are like a tall tree — upright, principled, ambitious, and always growing upward. If your Day Master is Yin Water (癸), you are like morning dew — gentle, adaptable, intuitive, and nurturing.

But the Day Master alone doesn't define you. The strength of your Day Master (determined by the season of birth and surrounding elements) and its interactions with the other pillars create a unique and nuanced portrait of who you are. A strong Day Master suggests independence and self-reliance, while a weaker Day Master may indicate someone who thrives through collaboration and support from others.
