In BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), compatibility is not simply about finding a “perfect match.” It's about understanding how two people's energies complement, support, or challenge each other — and using that understanding to build a stronger relationship.
In Chinese culture, BaZi compatibility readings have been used for centuries before marriage, business partnerships, and other important relationships. Day Master Compatibility
The starting point for BaZi compatibility is comparing the Day Masters of both charts. Since the Day Master represents your core self, the interaction between two Day Masters reveals the fundamental dynamic of the relationship.
Same Element
Two people with the same Day Master element share deep understanding and similar values. However, too much similarity can lead to competition or stagnation. For example, two Yang Wood (Jia) Day Masters are both principled leaders — great for mutual respect, but they may clash over who takes charge.
Productive Relationship
When one person's Day Master produces the other's element (Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, etc.), there is a natural dynamic of giving and receiving. The producer tends to be the more giving partner, while the receiver benefits from the support. This can be nurturing but may become one-sided if not balanced.
Controlling Relationship
When one Day Master controls the other (Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, etc.), there is a power dynamic. The controller provides discipline and structure, while the controlled person may feel restricted. In healthy relationships, this tension creates growth. In unhealthy ones, it becomes domination.
Complementary Elements
Some element pairs naturally complement each other — such as Water nurturing Wood, or Metal and Water creating a flow of precision and wisdom. These pairs often find their differences enriching rather than frustrating.

Beyond Day Master elements, BaZi compatibility examines how the Earthly Branches (the zodiac animals) across both charts interact. Two key patterns are:
Six Harmonies (六合)
Special pairs of Earthly Branches that naturally attract and harmonize. When these appear between two charts, they indicate areas of effortless connection.

- Rabbit & Dog → Fire harmony
- Dragon & Rooster → Metal harmony
- Snake & Monkey → Water harmony

Six Clashes (六冲)
Pairs of Earthly Branches that directly conflict. When these appear between charts, they indicate areas of friction that require awareness and effort.
- Rat & Horse — emotional vs. freedom clash
- Ox & Goat — value and priority clash
- Tiger & Monkey — approach and method clash
- Rabbit & Rooster — social style clash
- Dragon & Dog — authority and loyalty clash
- Snake & Pig — trust and transparency clash
Having a clash in your compatibility chart does not mean the relationship is doomed. Many successful partnerships have clashes — they create dynamic tension that can drive growth. The key is awareness and willingness to work through differences.
What Your Chart Needs in a Partner
One of the most powerful applications of BaZi compatibility is understanding what elements are missing or excessive in your chart — and finding a partner whose chart naturally provides balance.
For example, if your chart is heavy in Fire but lacking Water, a partner with strong Water elements can bring the emotional depth and wisdom that you need. If your chart has too much Metal (making you rigid), a Fire-strong partner can help you become more flexible and expressive.
